about

this song, i wrote right after waking up with this chord progression in my head. i opened up a nearby journal and here was, generally speaking, this entire song. i added a few things at the end to find form...other than that, this one was already written.

lyrics

In my dreams I was alone and going against the grain
In a world where a man could force ya to be his dame
And there was no light and the winds were cold
I was trapped up in a room- held back by fear
Held back by my own hold

Asleep for hours, wrapped more in snow
And in a dress that was too long for me
Draping on the floor
Running for something, untying more and more
Of what's sewn inside of me
How can I make it out the door?

It's time that I rise from these ashes
Instead of stirring the coals
It's time that I rise from these ashes
Instead of stirring the coals

Passengers riding along with me
Hiding from something I seem to be
Slowing myself with a stubbornness
Of a pit bull's jaw
And I trip up on the gown I was born in
Would I be sinning if I ripped it off
Stood there naked and raw

Exposed in the cold with this fire
Burning in me lord!
I will stay warm as long as I leave
The place where I was born!

Exposed in the cold with this fire
Burning in me lord!
I will stay warm as long as I leave
The place where I was born!

It's time that I rise from these ashes
Instead of stirring the coals
It's time that I rise from these ashes
Instead of stirring the coals
